Prasert Sirinapaporn (middle), Secretary General of the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), joined by Chatit Huayhongtong (3rd from left), President, Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd., Pornthip Viraphand (3rd from right), Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility & Special Projects, Star Petroleum Refining Public Company Limited (SPRC) and Dr. Pornpun Waitayangkoon (2nd from left), President of the International Association for the Future STEM Workforce (IAFSW), presented awards to the winners of the 2024 Biodiversity Photo Competition, themed “Exploring Thailand’s Insect Diversity,” during the opening ceremony of the annual event commemorating the International Day for Biodiversity 2024. The event was organized by ONEP to highlight its commitment to raise awareness of biodiversity and the crucial role of insects as bioindicators through camera lenses.
The Biodiversity Photo Competition, held for the first time in Thailand as part of the “Foster Future Forests” project by Chevron and SPRC, was a joint effort with their partners, namely IAFSW, ONEP, the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST), Kasetsart University, and Thammasat University. The competition aimed to inspire environmental conservation among youth and the general public. Participants competed for prizes totaling over 300,000 baht, with more than 3,000 entries submitted across three divisions: Junior High School, Senior High School / Vocational School, and the general public aged 18 and over.
To gain wider impact, selected photos will be made public and incorporated into the development of a taxonomy platform serving as a real-time entomological repository accessible by scientists around the world, thereby contributing to the sciences of tropical biodiversity as a whole.
