The Ministry of Science through the NSM and Chevron Enjoy Science have launched Enjoy Maker Space, a new kind of learning space at Chamchuri Square designed to free the imagination of young people and help them innovate, hoping to mold the next generation of young makers.

Dr. Atchaka Sibunruang, the Minister of Science and Technology, said that the Ministry, through the National Science Museum (NSM) and in cooperation with Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd. and the Kenan Institute Asia as part of Chevron Enjoy Science Project, have created a space for new forms of learning called Enjoy Maker Space at Science Square in Chamchuri Square. It aims to give young people hands-on practice through the integration of imagination and creativity in the learning process, helping them see that inspiration can lead to real innovations. NSM is principally responsible for the management of this learning area.

“The Ministry and Chevron Enjoy Science Project agree that genuinely lifting the competitiveness of the country in a sustainable way has to start with investing in young people, the country’s future. This means a correct foundational science learning process, which is the origin of Enjoy Maker Space and is consistent with the Ministry’s mission to improve the country’s workers with a knowledge of science and technology. This will lead to innovations, which are keys to drive the national economy toward the government’s Thailand 4.0 strategy. To do so requires an emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning, a critical foundation for future lifestyles and careers,” says Dr. Atchaka.

“The concept behind the launch of the Maker Space is to create a space where Thai youth can free their imaginations through science,” said Kannikar Wongthongsiri, Deputy Director and Acting Directory of NSM, “thereby inspiring thinkers and innovators, or “makers,” to freely express STEM learning in the form of their own work or inventions. This is a starting point for new innovations in the country. Enjoy Maker Space will hold hands-on activities, meaning work with real applications and learning without limits, both inside and outside the classroom. This learning space is equipped with both the space and tools, such as a 3D printer, laser cutter, and general tools like cardboard, plastic tubes, or other paraphernalia like popsicle sticks that facilitate the development of ideas and creation of inventions. This service is available to young people and their families every day from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., free of charge. NSM will also be holding a Maker Space Open House in key provinces throughout the country.”

“Enjoy Maker Space is one program sponsored by Chevron Enjoy Science Project,” said Artit Krichphiphat, Business Support general manager, Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd., “because we’ve seen that young people lacks the space to express their ideas and be creative. That’s why we’re focusing on promoting and developing the maker culture in Thailand. This maker concept will help make young people life-long learners through real, hands-on experience. Enjoy Maker Space has received input from the New York Hall of Science, an organization that specializes in designing educational scientific activities to propel a culture of creativity and innovation, or maker culture as it’s known worldwide. They have given advice on designing programs and trained NSM staff to be supervisors and experts who can guide the young people using the service.”

“Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd. values the promotion of maker culture in Thailand and sponsors the preparation of young people by holding a variety of ongoing programs,” added Artit, “such as the Bangkok Mini Maker Faire, Young Makers Contest, Maker Space Designing Workshop, etc. These programs show that Thai youth have the potential to be innovators or makers, but they need a lot more support and space to show their ideas. Launching the Enjoy Maker Space service is another important step towards giving Thai youth the chance to develop their potential to be fine thinkers, creators, and inventors. It can be considered significant progress in a project that hopes to promote the sustainable development of innovation in the country going forward.”
