Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production Ltd, together with Shelf Drilling, Ltd. and Lamprell Plc. held a naming ceremony for the new drilling rig “Krathong” at Mahidol Adulyadej naval dockyard in Chonburi province. The newbuild rig will start drilling activities in June to support Chevron’s operation in the Gulf of Thailand to deliver safe and reliable energy to support the country’s growing demand in the long run.

Chatit Huayhongthong, asset development general manager, Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production Ltd., said, “The new rig demonstrates our continued commitment to deliver energy safely and reliably in support of Thailand’s energy security. Additionally, it will help create new jobs and increase revenue to the government.”

Kurt Hoffman, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Shelf Drilling, added, “Our newbuild campaign has been completed on time and without any incidents – a truly collaborative effort between Chevron, Shelf Drilling and Lamprell over several month period. We are excited about the potential of this rig and its predecessor Chao Phraya, which is already in service, to optimize well construction in the Gulf of Thailand.”

The newbuild “Krathong” rig has been designed to suit Chevron’s operation in the Gulf of Thailand and to meet challenging drilling environment due to complex geology in the gulf. Equipped with advance drilling technology, it will optimize drilling capability and efficiency as well as ensure safe, environmentally friendly operations.
